The Business

G&S Vehicle Sales is Grant Halley’s used car and van forecourt on Regent Street in Keith, on the A96 between Elgin and Huntly. It’s a small, hand-picked stock, seven cars and vans as I write this, from a £2,950 Peugeot to a Golf GTI, with part exchange considered on everything and viewings by arrangement. You deal with Grant himself, from the first message to handing over the keys.

The Challenge

Car buyers shop on their phones, usually in the evening, and they compare. Every car had to be shown properly, inside and out, with the facts a buyer checks before they’ll travel: mileage, MOT, history, keys. And Grant needed to add and sell cars himself, without ringing me every time the stock changed.

• Filters that work the way buyers think: make, budget, gearbox, body type, four-wheel drive
• An easy way to ask about a car or book a viewing from a phone
• Part exchange: a way to send Grant your registration and a few photos for a figure
• An admin area so Grant adds cars, marks them sold and keeps it all current himself
• Found on Google for used cars in Keith and Moray

The Solution

I designed and built the site from scratch, in the paper grey, black and red of the G&S logo, with Archivo for the headings and IBM Plex Mono for the figures, and the G&S admin behind it.

• A homepage where the stock cars drive through the striped G&S logo, drawn live in the browser, with a plain version for phones that can’t manage it
• A stock page with filters for make, budget, gearbox, body type and four-wheel drive, sorting by price, mileage or age, and filter links you can share, like every automatic or everything under £5,000
• A page for every car with 16 to 21 photos split into exterior and interior, the registration on a number plate, the spec, an MOT countdown with a link to the GOV.UK MOT history, average miles a year, the features list and Grant’s own description
• Ask a question or book a viewing from any car, picking a day and morning, afternoon or evening, with the message already started: “Hi Grant, is the Golf still available?”
• A part exchange form: your registration on a plate, your mileage, a few photos from your phone, and Grant comes back with a figure
• Call and WhatsApp buttons throughout, with the first message pre-written
• A map of Moray showing Keith on the A96, with road miles from Inverness, Elgin, Aberdeen and Huntly
• The G&S admin: add a car, upload the photos, set the price and spec, and mark it sold, when it greys out with the price struck through and drops to the end of the list
• Structured data for the dealer and every car, with its price and availability, so Google can show them as cars for sale
• Everything hosted on the site itself, fonts and 3D code included, visitor statistics with no cookies, and a strict policy on what the pages are allowed to load

The outcome

A buyer in Elgin or Huntly can find the right car, look at it properly, check the MOT and book a viewing from the sofa, and Grant knows who is coming and when. When a car sells, he marks it sold and the site takes care of the rest.
