Privacy policy

How I collect, use and protect your information. Last updated: October 2026.

This policy explains how Colourjam (“I”, “me”) collects, uses and protects your personal information when you visit colourjam.com or use my services. Colourjam is a web design and development business in Moray, Scotland, run by Chris Thornton.

What I collect

When you get in touch

If you use a form on this site, email me or ring me, I may collect your name, email address, phone number, business name, your current website address and anything else you choose to tell me.

When you use live chat

If live chat is switched on and you use it, I collect your name and email address (so I can verify you and reply) and the messages you send.

When you use the website check

If you use the free website check, I keep the address you checked, the results, the time and your IP address (to stop the check being misused), and my phone gets a short notification. To test speed, the address is also sent to Google’s PageSpeed Insights service. The check doesn’t ask for your name or email. If you ask me to email you the results, I keep your name (if you give it) and email address with the check, save it as an enquiry, and may follow up once to see if you’d like help. I won’t add you to a mailing list.

When you visit the site

Like most websites, the server records basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit. If you allow it, Google Analytics also records how you use the site (see Cookies below).

How I use it

  • To reply to your enquiry, prepare a free mock-up or a quote, and provide the services you ask for
  • To send project updates and invoices
  • To keep the site secure and stop spam
  • To understand which pages are useful and improve the site

I will never sell your personal information or use it for anything not described here without your consent.

Where your enquiry goes

When you send a form, your message is emailed to me, saved in a secure database on my web hosting as a backup, and a short notification (your name and what you’ve asked about) is sent to my phone through my own Colourjam app. The same app tells me when someone starts a live chat or sends a chat message. Messages that look like spam are logged so I can check nothing genuine was blocked.

Cookies

Essential. The site sets a small cookie to remember your cookie choice, and the live chat (when switched on) keeps a small note in your browser’s storage so your conversation stays open between pages.

Analytics. I use Google Analytics to see which pages people visit, how they arrived and roughly where they are (country or city level). There are no advertising cookies and I don’t sell or share this data. If you choose “No thanks” in the cookie note, Google Analytics is switched off for you on this site and its cookies are removed. You can change your mind at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.

Keeping it secure

The site uses an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Systems and databases are password-protected and kept up to date, and only I have access to your details.

How long I keep it

  • Enquiries: two years after our last contact
  • Client records: seven years after a project ends, for legal and accounting reasons
  • Google Analytics data: 26 months
  • Website checks: two years

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the information I hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to how I use it, or receive a copy in a portable format. Just get in touch using the details below.

Other services

The fonts, and the map on the Work page (coastline data from OpenStreetMap), are all stored on this site, so they don’t contact any other service.

Children

My services aren’t aimed at children under 16 and I don’t knowingly collect their information.
