Eat Mair Fish
A small, quick website for a family fish merchant in Buckie: what’s in stock, opening hours and the delivery runs from Inverness to Huntly, with fish posted overnight anywhere in the UK.
The Business
Eat Mair Fish Ltd has traded from Old Station Yard on Marine Place in Buckie for over 40 years. Edward Mair founded it and his son Eric runs it now. They buy from sustainable stocks and sell to wholesale and retail customers: haddock and smoked haddock, salmon, kippers, lemon sole, halibut, monkfish, mussels, prawns and more, with herring, mackerel and roe in season.
A van runs to Inverness twice a week, wholesale orders go out to Cullen, Keith, Fochabers and Huntly, and fish can be vacuum packed and posted overnight anywhere in the UK.
The Challenge
Eat Mair Fish didn’t need a big website. Customers mostly want to know what’s in the shop, when it’s open and whether they can get a delivery. The job was to answer those questions clearly, be found on Google for fresh fish in Buckie, and not cost more than a small shop should spend on a website.
- What’s in stock, and that other fish and seafood can be sourced on request
- Opening hours for every day of the week
- The delivery areas and the overnight postal service
- Quick to load and easy to read on a phone
- Set up so Google understands what the business is and where it is
The Solution
I built a three-page site from scratch: the shop, deliveries and recipes. There’s no clutter, just the information people are after and the phone number.
- A homepage with the fish selection and the opening hours
- A deliveries page with the van runs and the Royal Mail service
- Structured data on every page describing the business, so Google can show it properly
- Small, light pages that load quickly
“Chris designed our website and did a great job. Would be happy to recommend his services to anyone.”Debra Mair, Eat Mair Fish
The outcome
Anyone searching for fresh fish in Buckie finds the shop, its hours and what’s on the slab, and wholesale customers along the coast can see where the vans go.
It’s a good example of a small website done properly: no more than the business needs, and nothing missing.
